Temporary Autonomous Zones
vImmersive Performance Installation | 2019 | Ron Cook Hub, York | Devised by The Company
Supported by: The University of York Peggy Nonhebel Scholarship| In collaboration with: Tim Wright, Bearfoot, Liam Maloney & Quip
An immersive installation created by performers, DJs and fixed media, its ultimate aim is to reframe cultural and social factors in electronic dance music through the media of dance, theatre, immersion and the application of critical theory.
With a soundtrack scratched live by the DJs, and performers ‘scratched’ live by the director, an immersive narrative is built through interactions with their environment and audience. They responded to provocations of three core themes found in club culture; ‘Queer’, ‘Excess’ and ‘Hierarchy’.
Throughout the duration of the piece a transient, social and cultural microclimate is built, a Temporary Autonomous Zone, outside of which the work doesn’t exist.
